How do some people still mine bitcoins in 2017?
The best way is very simple, you do it indirectly.

This can be achieved by mining Scrypt, x11, etc coins. These coins have the ability to generate perhaps 1000s per day. Miners are market makers and sell these new coins in the open market and in some cases reach 1000% gains in days. Most sell these coins on open exchanges for Bitcoin and thus they have indirectly mined to Bitcoin.

In 2014 I spoke to this here: Learn How To Mine Crypto Currency. From The Experts Who Do It. by Mike Townsend on Around The Coin from the http://AroundTheCoin.com podcast.

The coins of course have shifted since 2014 and rzr is no longer around but the premise is the same today.

Cryptopedia / ASIC Miners and Hashing Algorithms (SHA-256, Scrypt, X11)
https://www.tokens24.com/cryptopedia/mining/asic-mining-hashing-algorithm
There are two common types of ASIC miners, those that can mine SHA based coins like the Antminer S9 and those that mine Scrypt hashing algorithm based coins (see Antminer L3+).
